Description
The reference for “Welcome” is Kasar Abdulla. Kasar was born in Kurdistan, and has lived in Nashville for over 20 years. She is a founding member of the Welcome Tennessee Initiative, a movement focused on welcoming immigrants, and celebrating the diversity that they add to Tennessee. Kasar has worked tirelessly as a community organizer, social-justice educator, and human rights advocate. Kasar exemplifies the title of the current Soundwaves Exhibit. “Global Voices, Local Heart”. The portrait incorporates a repurposed window. The window allows the viewer to see themselves in the piece. The reflection serves a connecting point as well a potential barrier. I’m considering the idea of being on the inside looking out, and the outside looking in.
