Description

This piece features two brothers Ubaldo and Carlos standing in front of a home they are building. They came to Nashville from Mexico and work as carpenters. The title of course references the well known Grant Wood piece. I titled the piece with the descripter “Mesoamerican” not as a geographic but rather a value modifier. Ubaldo and Carlos have that defined ethical stature that we aspirationally ascribe to Middle America. The brothers display a devotion to family, hard work and principle that we associate with the small town, the hearths and hearts of many a Mellencamp-sque lyrical ode. The word “gothic” I feel fits the quiet dignity, the noble bearing of the two true gentlemen. These men have made their homes here in Middle Tennesse bringing with them a value system from the middle of the Americas which is right at home here.
