Soundwaves Gallery Starting XI: Alexis Jones

This season’s Soundwaves Gallery: THE HE(ART) OF NASHVILLE continues to grow with another stunning addition to the Starting XI, a collection of 11 specialty artworks commissioned by Nashville SC and created by local Nashville artists using soccer-related items. Each piece will be unveiled throughout the 2025 season and auctioned off at its conclusion, with proceeds benefiting the Nashville SC Community Fund.

Today, we’re thrilled to introduce work from Nashville-based artist Alexis Jones.

Recycling materials and reducing as much waste as possible is a huge priority in my work and I especially wanted to challenge myself with this piece. I collected off cut acrylic pieces and vinyl from a local sign shop in Nashville and off cuts of plywood and MDF board from the woodshop at my maker space. I then used a digital sketch to cut the materials down using a laser CNC.

The only new material incorporated was the artificial turf. My concept behind the piece was to give an abstracted birds eye’s view of a soccer stadium. Though the use of the material broke out of goal for the project, I felt it was necessary to drive home the visual theme.

About the Artist
Alexis Jones is a multi-disciplinary artist born in Jackson, Mississippi and based in Tennessee, currently working as a graphic designer. While her background is mostly in digital art, she shifted towards more 3D work, while working in sign production during the pandemic. After learning how much raw material is wasted in the production process across so many industries, she became interested in what could be done with materials that would otherwise be deemed as trash. She often utilizes laser cutting, and different painting techniques to transform salvage wood and plexiglass.

Starting XI

This piece is now on view now as part of the Starting XI at the Soundwaves Gallery in GEODIS Park, displayed alongside THE HE(ART) OF NASHVILLE, a rotating exhibition of 44 works by 44 local artists curated in partnership with the Arts & Business Council in collaboration with a three-person curatorial committee comprised of local arts leaders Michael J. McBride, Artist, Illustrator, Printmaker, Painter, and Instructor of Art at Tennessee State University; Amanda H. Hellman, Director of the Vanderbilt University Museum of Art; and Michael Mitchell (aka mikewindy), Artist and Art Education Coordinator at Tennessee State University.
