Description

This piece was inspired by the idea of place. There is a term—genius loci—which refers to the unique quality of a particular place. Every place has a genius loci which is specific to its location, its history, its composition, and its relationship to other places. I believe that people also have this. Everyone has a uniqueness that is individual and unlike anyone else. Because I was moved to create an original work specifically for this call, I decided to depart from my usual abstract expressionist work and use traditional images of natural resources from vintage maps to illustrate the bounty that exists here. This playful painting is a tribute to the special place that is Nashville, the individuals who live here, and the particular attributes that make everything and everyone one-of-a-kind.
