Barry A. Noland Named Artist of the Week on The Nashville Sign

June 9, 2022 — The Arts & Business Council of Greater Nashville is saddened to learn that Artist of the Week, Barry A. Noland, passed away this week. We honor Barry’s life and legacy as a photographer by sharing his work with you, and we offer our deepest condolences to his family, friends and colleagues for their incredible loss. Details about arrangements are not known at this time.

The Arts & Business Council, Blackbird Media, and F&M Bank have teamed up to present the Artist of the Week on The Nashville Sign. This week’s featured artist is Barry A. Noland!

Barry is a photographer whose visual aesthetic of calm, peaceful presentations with an emphasis on composition has stayed constant throughout his artistic career.

“I typically shoot subjects, human and non-human, from reaction rather than vision. While, depending on purpose, creating without a specific vision can be detrimental to sharing your experience, I enjoy the sense of working off-the-cuff, in mid-air.”

Barry is a native of Cairo, IL and a self-described “Neo-native” of Nashville, as he has lived here his entire adult life. He is a former artist’s model (working nationally) who trained himself in the art of photography through the influences of photographers with whom he was working. His journey into photography began with figure and fashion work and gradually expanded into abstract, nature, body/figure, and still life.

His work has been recognized, published, and awarded regionally, nationally, and internationally. That recognition includes but is not limited to the International Color Awards, Black & White Spider Awards, Atlanta Celebrates Photography, and BNA Arts at the Airport. Recently, he was juried into the annual National Competition of the Soho Photo Gallery in NYC as well as the 2020 Communication Arts Photography Annual 61.

Barry was selected as a featured artist in the The Curb Center for Art and Vanderbilt’s Art of Healing Exposition, featuring works from the World Health Organization’s Art to Act for Health initiative and other Nashville-area artists. The exposition will run until December 16, 2022.
