Yanira Vissepo Named Artist of the Week on The Nashville Sign

The Arts & Business Council, Blackbird Media, and F&M Bank have teamed up to present the Artist of the Week on The Nashville Sign. This week’s featured artist is Yanira Vissepo!

Yanira is a multi-disciplinary artist focusing on printmaking and textile art. Her woodblock designs reflect her time studying traditional mokuhanga printmaking in Japan. Yanira merges traditional with new, utilizing mokuhanga as the translator when creating free form tapestries, block printed textiles, soft sculptures, and works on paper.

She feels she is creating other worlds, with textile as the vessel and printmaking the action it takes for that vessel to move through time.

“Motifs are a language I have found a home in. The shapes and colors create tension within the abstract world activating a sense of motion. A pause in time – serene.”

Yanira moved to Tennessee from Puerto Rico in 2002. A self-taught artist, she explored different visual art media, but ultimately discovered a passion for printmaking while creating block printed textiles and tapestries from her home. By 2018 she was preparing for her first solo exhibition, and in 2019 she attended The International School of Mokuhanga in Kyoto, Japan. Yanira was the Artist-in-Residence at Coop Gallery in 2020, and in 2021 taught block printing classes to adults and teenagers at Frist Art Museum and The Nashville Public Library in Nashville, TN.
