Sarah Spillers Named Artist of the Week on The Nashville Sign

The Arts & Business Council, Blackbird Media, and F&M Bank have teamed up to present the Artist of the Week on The Nashville Sign. This week’s featured artist is Sarah Spillers!

Sarah Spillers is an award-winning contemporary painter-educator, currently working with acrylic on canvas. A Nashville native, her recent works depict the aftermath of the COVID-19 Global Pandemic in this populous city. She has been exploring the new environment that the pandemic has created and translated it into a series of paintings, emphasizing the use of lively color and texture in contrast to these gloomy and more serious times.

“In March of 2020, all of our ‘everyday’ lives changed due to the COVID-19 global pandemic, but in broader terms the impact of this crisis is continuously altering the physical environment that we each live in. In some ways, it’s given our space a more grey and drab overtone….This body of work analyzes the use of color, line, texture and movement to depict Nashville in a way that aims to reunite my community in these rare, lonely, and unprecedented times.”

Sarah earned her bachelor’s degree at Austin Peay State University studying K-12 Art Education. As a professional educator, she strives to help young learners foster the same enthusiasm for art that she has. She currently teaches art at West Creek Middle School in Clarksville.

One of Sarah’s paintings in her “Nashville: Covid Collection” is included in Austin Peay State University’s permanent art collection. She is currently represented by The Downtown Artists Collaborative in Clarksville, Tennessee. She was awarded the Center for Excellence in the Creative Arts Summer Research Grant, as well as a Center for Excellence in the Creative Arts Purchase Award.
