The Arts & Business Council, Blackbird Media, and F&M Bank have teamed up to present the Artist of the Week on The Nashville Sign. This week’s featured artist is Andy King!
Andy King is a painter and a teacher of art and art history. In his oil paintings, he demonstrates elements of the Symbolists, Surrealism, Disrupted Realism, Shan Shui painting, and German Expressionism.
He describes his current collection of paintings “Inheritors of Chance” as mark and color-driven. When exhibited, all of the paintings flow into one another in a large band that wraps around the walls. They are intended to be simultaneously interpreted as a cohesive narrative and as individual pieces. His calligraphic brushwork is meant to create a sense of movement and flux as a representation of persistent change.
“My paintings explore the notions of chance and predestination. Through quasi-surreal imagery and evocative symbolism, I explore the interplay of nature and nurture as they are influenced by the inconceivable amount of chance that contributes to who we are destined to become.”
Andy forged a deep connection with visual art at an early age while growing up in Gallatin, TN. After college he moved to Nashville to begin his teaching and art careers. He says he has always drawn and created, beginning by filling notebooks with doodles that he credits as the foundation of his “mark-making” process.
His creative practice has stretched across a variety of disciplines including drawing, woodworking, illustration, and graphic design, but he turned back to painting in recent years, exploring themes pertaining to the human endeavor, and to histories both personal and universal.
You can see his collection “Inheritors of Chance” at his first solo exhibition beginning August 6th at Modfellows Gallery in Nashville. To learn more about Andy King and his work, visit andykingartist.com.
