Amy Harms Named Artist of the Week on the Nashville Sign

The Arts & Business Council, Blackbird Media, and F&M Bank have teamed up to present the Artist of the Week on The Nashville Sign. This week’s featured artist is Amy Harms!

Amy Harms is a painter and mixed media visual artist working out of her studio in Brentwood, TN. In her weave series, her process is to create paintings, then hand-cut, rearrange and hand-weave them into a single piece. In certain projects, she includes vinyl LP covers she has painted and cut to incorporate into the weave.

The collection explores themes in music with the motion of the artwork inspired by sound waves and musicians’ lyrics. Each piece has a new pattern intended to emphasize certain strips of colors and textures like a soloist or bridge of a song emerging from the composition.

“The reason I cut my paintings – the individual slivers of reality, the rearranging – this process is what makes me whole. It’s like life to me. Taking the past, dissecting it, creating something different…making the end vision more evolved and interesting.”

Amy studied at Harrington College of Design in Chicago, and has degrees from Missouri State University in Communications and Music. Her career began in the gallery world. Over the last 20 years she has directed three art galleries and most recently served as a corporate art consultant in Chicago. Amy worked alongside many other artists creating large scale installations for hospitality, corporate, healthcare and residential settings. In addition to her work in the visual art world, Amy continues to nurture her passion for music teaching dozens of young, budding musicians in her piano studio.
