The Arts & Business Council, Blackbird Media, and F&M Bank have teamed up to present the Artist of the Week on The Nashville Sign. This week’s featured artist is Michael Cooper!
Mike is an experienced large-scale wall muralist who also creates decorative interior finishes, Venetian plasters, and hand-painted large-scale graphics and signage.
Mike started his company Murals & More LLC in 1990 when his wife and business partner encouraged him to make his lifelong hobby creating murals his full-time career. Since then he has designed and painted everything from small residential interior projects to enormous hotel interiors, highway painting projects, and public art installations.
He is internationally renowned for his ability to create realistic and whimsical trompe l’oeil murals. One may think they are looking at a series of wrought-iron balconies or a clumsily placed ladder, but Mike has actually expertly created an illusion of dimension and perspective on a flat painted surface.
“Having people try to figure out what is real and what is painted makes my day. Just having them smile while looking at my work completes me.”
Mike’s first opportunity to collaborate on a mural was in his hometown of Memphis. When he was a first-grade student, his drawings were selected to be incorporated into a large tile mural that still exists today.
Although custom murals are his specialty, he has also provided clients with painted furniture, ceiling murals, floor cloths, backdrops, canvas murals and many other specialty items.
