Description
This painting features Morelia Cuevas, daughter of Manuel Arturo Jose Cuevas Martinez, known simply as Manuel. Self-assured, she sits facing towards the viewer, with a jacket hanging in the background. Her father is a well-known clothing designer for artists all around, and the jacket is iconic. I only learned who she was and the significance of the jacket after I painted this. My focus while painting was the elegantly scripted tattoo on the inside of her arm: “loyalty.” This declaration of loyalty stretches from the family and community that shapes us, to an insistent reminder to the self you strive to be in the world.
NOTE: The artwork will remain on display in the Soundwaves Gallery through the end of the 2026 Season.
